DIMENSIONS OF EMPLOYABILITY INFLUENCING HOW ITS DEVELOPMENT IS MANAGED RANGING FROM INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL DIRECTION
OTHER DIRECTED MANAGEMENT TO SELF-DIRECTED MANAGEMENT
employability is a developmental phenomenon that needs to be pursued by individuals in their drive to achieve career success, that is: workers go through different stages of development as their employability evolves.
employability, to be attained needs to be understood and enacted, that is: the ability aspect of employ-ability requires understanding, learning and the use of both cognition and metacognition in its enactment.
employability is a situational phenomenon influenced by many factors that is: workers need different forms of and approaches to employability depending on their situation (e.g. educational level, type of work, workplace culture, personal capabilities in terms of dealing with employability demands).
employability is agential that is the worker needs to be self-directed and to be able to take actions to shape the direction of their employability and career choices and directions.
employability a result all of the above and can occur in multiple levels or modes ranging from a novice or preliminary level of employability (largely received or shaped by mentors) to an advanced form of self-managed and dynamic employability, imbued by wise practice.
Joy Higgs (2019)
Employability is a multi-dimensional, multi-phase and diversely realised phenomenon at both personal and population levels. That is to say employability is not a one-off accomplishment, or a solo effort. Firstly, it takes time to build up work capabilities. Secondly, the requirements of particular jobs differ and, as people progress through their careers, they will need different employ-abilities. Thirdly, there’s a rapid evolution of jobs, of job demands, of system (e.g. communications) affordances to support different job changes. And finally, the whole idea of work and how it is done (including via artificial intelligence and virtually) is a rapidly changing reality. Thus individuals, working communities and populations will inevitably participate in multiple phases of work preparation and manifestation. (Cloutman and Higgs, 2019.)
